Jesu, the ultimate servant, went from washing feet to washing us of our sin. In John 13:4-5 Jesus did this:
He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
Jeramie Rinne beautifully shows how this act of service is eclipsed by Christ’s act of service to us on the cross:
That night Jesus stripped down and washed the dirt from the disciples’ feet with his own hands. The next day, he was stripped again, and those same hands were nailed to a cross in order to wash the sin from the disciples’ souls. Those who stand forgiven at the foot of the cross look at leadership and greatness in an upside-down way that scandalizes the world.
