1 Peter 4:3-6

1 Peter 4:3-6 (ESV): 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

What is a time you felt peer pressure?  Why is peer pressure so powerful?

How does it help us understand these verses if we remember that Peter is calling Christians "exiles" (1 Peter 1:1), people who are living in a foreign country?

For the Christian, the idea of God's judgment is meant to be an encouragement.  Why do you think this is?

1 Peter 4:1-2

1 Peter 4:1-2 (ESV): 1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.

1 Peter 3:21-22

1 Peter 3:21-22 (ESV): 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

1 Peter 3:18-20

1 Peter 3:18-20 (ESV): 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

When you are hurting, what truths can help you be patient and endure the pain?

Seeing what Peter says about Jesus, should we always expect for life to be fair? Why not?

Peter uses Jesus and Noah as examples of why we should wait patiently when suffering.  What are things you experience that will not always be this way?  What are things that you need to face with patience and with hope?

1 Peter 3:13-17

1 Peter 3:13-17 (ESV): 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

Discussion Questions:

What does the husband/wife relationship look like in the movies and TV shows we watch?

For Peter, telling Christian husbands to "honor" their wives and that their wives were "heirs" with them was a radical thought. In what ways does the Bible call us to be radically different in how we treat each other?

Our relationship with God is connected to our relationships with other people. Why is it so important to God that we are loving to the people he puts in our lives? Why is it harder sometimes to love the people closest to us?

1 Peter 3:1-6

1 Peter 3:1-6 (ESV): Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:18-21

1 Peter 2:18-21 (ESV): Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
